Shakespeare in Love (DVD)

In this well-conceived Elizabethan comedy, writers Tom Stoppard comedy playwright and Marc Norman ask the question: Who was William Shakespeare's muse? The answer: Viola de Lesseps, a young noblewoman who dreams of acting on a man's stage. The screenwriters deliver a cleverly crafted scenario which beautifully illustrates both the early aspirations of the playwright, comedy playwright and a glimpse into the culture of Elizabethan theater. The Theater of Plautus

The relationship between actors comedy playwright and spectators has been of perennial interest to playwrights. The Roman playwright Plautus (ca. 200 BCE) was particularly adept at manipulating this relationship. Plautus allowed his actors to acknowledge freely the illusion in which they were taking part, to elicit laughter through humorous asides comedy playwright and monologues, comedy playwright and simultaneously to flatter comedy playwright and tease the spectators.These metatheatrical techniques are the focus of Timothy J. Moore`s innovative study of the comedies of Plautus.
